That is all the calculator needs. It takes about a minute.

Most second-hand ThinkPads in South Africa started life on a corporate lease. Three years on a desk, a refresh cycle, and a stack of them comes back with asset tags on the base, a company name engraved on the lid and a battery that has done a thousand meetings. None of that puts us off. A ThinkPad is built to survive that life, and the second-hand market knows it.

We price ThinkPads on the processor more than the model letter. A T14 and an L14 from the same year are closer in value than a T14 Gen 1 and a T14 Gen 4, because the generation of the Core i5 or i7 inside is what a buyer is really paying for. We still buy 8th gen ThinkPads like the T480 and T490, which most buyers no longer do, and everything from 10th gen through to Core Ultra.

We only buy working ThinkPads, in Excellent or Good condition. It has to boot, the screen, keyboard and ports have to work, and it cannot still be owned or managed by a company. We cannot buy a ThinkPad until it is fully released from company device management. If you are clearing a whole department rather than one laptop, our business route handles fleets.

What affects your offer.

Processor generation over model letter

A 12th gen L14 can be worth more than a 10th gen T14. Check the processor name in Settings, System, About: an i5-1245U is 12th gen, an i5-10310U is 10th. The generation matters more to the price than which series it is.

Memory on an X1 Carbon

The X1 Carbon's memory is soldered to the board, so the amount it shipped with is the amount it will always have. An 8GB Carbon is a harder sell than a 16GB one, and the calculator asks so the offer reflects it.

Battery wear after a lease

Three years of daily charging at a desk takes a ThinkPad battery well down from new. It does not disqualify it, but a battery that still holds a working day is worth more than one that needs to live on its charger.

Keyboard shine and palm-rest wear

ThinkPad keyboards are the reason people buy them, so a shiny, worn keyboard or a palm rest with the soft-touch coating rubbed away is what pushes one from Excellent down to Good. Grade it honestly and the offer holds.

Wear and tear we are happy with.

We only buy working ThinkPads. If it powers on, boots to Windows, and the screen, keyboard, trackpad and ports all work, the lease-return wear below is normal and is priced into Good rather than turned away.

  • Asset tag stickers, or the company name engraved on the lid
  • Sticker residue where an asset tag used to be
  • Shiny keys and a worn TrackPoint cap
  • Soft-touch coating rubbed off the palm rest
  • Scuffs and scratches on the lid
  • A battery that no longer lasts a full day
  • No charger, or a generic USB-C charger in place of the Lenovo one
  • A small dent on a corner that has not cracked the screen

We buy Windows laptops working, in Excellent or Good condition. A cracked screen or a laptop that will not start is something we cannot buy for now. What we can do with a broken one.

Upgrading? Put it towards the new one.

Most people move to a ThinkPad T14 or X1 Carbon on Core Ultra. Most ThinkPad owners stay with ThinkPad, and an older one still covers part of the step to a newer generation of the same keyboard.

Lenovo ThinkPad questions.

No. We see it on most of the ThinkPads we buy. Leave the tag on if you like, or peel it off, either way is fine. What matters is that the laptop works and is no longer managed by the company.
