Sell your EliteBook, from an 8th gen 840 to a G11.

The G number on the base tells us the generation, and the generation sets most of the price. Asset tags and engraving are fine. It has to work.

That is all the calculator needs. It takes about a minute.

The EliteBook is one of the most common company laptops in South Africa, which is why so many of them come out of lease agreements and off employee desks. HP made that easy for us: the G number printed on the base is effectively a generation code. A G7 is 10th gen, a G8 is 11th, a G9 is 12th, and a G10 on the 840 and 850 is 13th.

That makes pricing an EliteBook unusually clean. Find the model and the G number, confirm Core i5 or i7, and the calculator does the rest. We also still buy 8th gen EliteBooks, the 840 G5 and G6 generation, which most buyers have stopped taking.

We only buy working EliteBooks, graded Excellent or Good. An ex-company machine with a scuffed lid and a battery that has seen better years is exactly what we expect. A machine still owned or managed by a company is one we cannot buy until IT has fully released it.

What affects your offer.

The G number

It is printed on the base label and it maps straight to a processor generation. Each step up is a meaningful step in price, so a G9 is worth looking up properly rather than calling it a G8 from memory.

800 series or 600 series

The 830, 840 and 850 are HP's premium business range and the 640, 650 and 660 sit just below. The calculator prices them on separate lines, so pick the right model number rather than the size.

The aluminium lid and corners

EliteBooks are metal, which means a drop leaves a dent instead of a crack. A clean lid and straight corners keep it at Excellent. A dented corner usually means Good, which is still a sale.

Battery health on an ex-lease machine

HP's own diagnostics will show battery health, and after three years at a desk it is often well down. Check the percentage before you choose a condition, so the offer does not move after testing.

Wear and tear we are happy with.

We only buy working EliteBooks. If it boots, the screen and keyboard work and every port does what it should, this is the wear we expect on a business laptop and price for.

  • Asset tag stickers, barcodes or an engraved company name
  • Adhesive residue left by a removed tag
  • Shiny keys and a polished trackpad
  • Light scratches across the aluminium lid
  • A dented corner from a drop
  • A battery holding noticeably less than it did new
  • No charger, or a different USB-C charger
  • A missing rubber foot underneath

We buy Windows laptops working, in Excellent or Good condition. A cracked screen or a laptop that will not start is something we cannot buy for now. What we can do with a broken one.

Upgrading? Put it towards the new one.

Most people move to an EliteBook 840 G11 or a ThinkPad T14. If you are buying your own work laptop after years of company ones, an ex-lease EliteBook still pays for a good share of a newer business machine.
